Public Works Week in Review for October 30, 2025

The Public Works Department is made up of various sub-departments including Fleet, Line Repair, Streets/Stormwater and Traffic, Wastewater, and Water. Each week, over 140 employees are responsible for the maintenance, monitoring, and improvement of existing and new infrastructure across League City which includes everything from roadways and traffic lights to storm drains, sewers, and water production.

Below are some tips and projects they are working on:

Asphalt Street Maintenance Update

Crews have completed major roadway improvements on Mayhaw and W. NASA. These upgrades have strengthened the pavement foundation and added new asphalt surfaces, resulting in smoother and safer streets for drivers. The completed work will help extend the lifespan of these roadways and improve overall travel conditions for our residents.

Auxiliary Power Automatic Transfer Switch Repairs

This week, the Water Production Department replaced the PLC and HMI screen on the automatic transfer switch (ATS) system at the S. HWY 3 water pumping facility. The ATS monitors the utility power supply. When the power is stable and within acceptable voltage and frequency ranges, allows it to flow to the connected loads. If the ATS detects a power outage or abnormal utility conditions such as voltage sags, surges, or frequency deviations it automatically initiates the transfer process. The ATS then sends a signal to start the generator, ensuring it reaches the proper operating conditions (voltage, frequency, and readiness) the ATS switches the electrical load from the utility to the generator, ensuring a continuous, reliable, and uninterrupted power supply which is especially critical for the operation of the water pumping facility. The system continuously monitors both sources. When utility power is restored and stable, the ATS transfers the load back to the utility and safely shuts down the generator returning the system to normal operation.

Fire Truck Maintenance and Repair

In coordination with the Fire Department, Fleet Maintenance received a fire apparatus requiring maintenance due to a reported issue with the air system. The air system is vital to operating the vehicle's air brake system, ensuring that all components receive the correct air pressure for safe and effective performance. Upon inspection and diagnosis, mechanics confirmed the presence of an air brake system leak. Air leaks are critical safety concerns, as they can compromise the functionality of essential systems such as brakes, air suspension, and other pneumatic components on which the vehicle depends. To address the issue and restore the unit to operational readiness, mechanics replaced the brake valve and a relay valve. These repairs were essential to ensure the first responder unit is safely returned to service and maintain the reliability and longevity of the equipment throughout its operational life.
