Atlas Energy recognized for operational deployment of 28 autonomous frac sand trucks in the Permian Basin, powered by Kodiak AI
AUSTIN, Texas, July 23, 2026: Atlas Energy Solutions Inc. (NYSE: AESI) has been recognized by FreightWaves with its 2026 Award for AI Excellence in Operational Integration. The award honors companies that have adopted or custom-built artificial intelligence into their own operations to deliver measurable results. FreightWaves presented the award live at its Supply Chain AI Symposium in Chicago on July 15, 2026.
Atlas earned the recognition for deploying one of the most extensive and demanding autonomous trucking operations in North America. The company's fleet, enabled by Kodiak AI (Nasdaq: KDK), is believed to be the largest operational deployment of driverless Class 8 (eg. Semi, 18-wheeler) trucks in the world.
As the leading supplier of frac sand in the Permian Basin, Atlas moves thousands of tons of refined sand to well sites daily, delivered on time across remote desert roads that are often unpaved and unmarked. The region has one of the highest driving fatality rates in the country, and conditions make attracting and retaining drivers persistently difficult.
After extensive field trials, Atlas deployed 28 AI-enabled autonomous trucks running Kodiak Driver, the autonomous driving system developed by Kodiak AI. The system pairs vehicle-agnostic hardware with a proprietary AI foundation model that ingests camera, radar and lidar data to navigate an environment with few of the lane markings most autonomous systems rely on. The fleet logged more than 23,500 hours on lease roads in the first quarter of 2026, a 110 percent increase from 10,700 hours in the fourth quarter of 2025. It has delivered more than 15,000 loads and an estimated 450,000 tons of frac sand.
"Moving sand across the Permian is among the hardest logistics challenges in the country," said John Turner, Chief Executive Officer of Atlas Energy Solutions. "The roads are rough, the distances are long, and good drivers are hard to find and keep. Atlas put the Kodiak Driver to work on lease roads to make that work safer and more reliable. This award reflects Atlas Energy's commitment to identify industry supply chain inefficiencies and re-engineer them to reduce complexity, risk and cost."
Atlas is planning further expansion of its delivery network across the Permian Basin, including a larger AI-enabled truck fleet.
