Faces of NLU: Marcelo Salinas

Marcelo Salinas embodies the spirit of global entrepreneurship. As a Bachelor of Science in Management student at National Louis University, he's not just pursuing a degree-he's building a bridge between his established business in Mexico and his ambitious plans for expansion into the United States.

Marcelo's story highlights the far-reaching impact of NLU's international programs. "I would like to thank the university for having international programs which give people like me an opportunity even at a distance in Mexico," he shares. His gratitude speaks to the university's commitment to breaking down geographical barriers to education.

Marcelo's path to NLU wasn't typical. He already owns a successful business in Mexico, but recognized that formal education would be essential for his next chapter. "I have my own business in Mexico and plan to expand to the USA. I needed a formal education for this, and I like the topic too," he explains.

His decision to choose NLU came through a unique international partnership. "I chose NLU because they have a program of a double major with my Mexican university," Marcelo notes. However, what started as a practical choice quickly became something more meaningful. "I do like the program offerings and the professors I've had. I like the online teaching methodology."

One of Marcelo's most transformative experiences came in an unexpected place-his legal and ethical decision-making class. "I learned a lot about US law and the differences it has with Mexican law. It did change the way I was looking into developing the business in the USA," he reflects. This course didn't just teach him about legal frameworks; it fundamentally shifted his approach to international business expansion.

Another pivotal moment came through his interaction with Professor Sattler in Strategic Management Capstone. "He made me understand things in a different way, contrary to normal logic," Marcelo recalls. "Sometimes in business there's different and more efficient ways to do things." This insight exemplifies how NLU's educational approach challenges students to think beyond conventional wisdom.

Marcelo's journey hasn't been without challenges. When asked about his biggest obstacle, he's candid: "Time. Working, studying, family, business. Time has been the biggest obstacle but with good organization everything works out."

His determination runs deep, fueled by a clear vision: "My determination is to be able to have success and provide a better life for my family." This motivation keeps him focused on his ultimate goal-continuing to grow his business and helping more people across different countries.

When asked to describe NLU in one word, Marcelo chooses "Opportunity." For him, this isn't just about personal advancement-it's about the doors that education opens. "This major and this university will help me have a better opportunity at expanding and having success," he explains.

His advice to future students reflects this mindset: "Be motivated and have a clear goal. This will help you through college." It's wisdom born from experience, from someone who understands that education is most powerful when it serves a purpose beyond the classroom.
