Avon, OH - July 31, 2026 - Gilbane Building joined Cleveland Clinic leaders, caregivers, elected officials and community members to celebrate the groundbreaking of the $322 million expansion of Cleveland Clinic Avon Hospital and the Richard E. Jacobs Health Center. Serving as construction manager, Gilbane is leading the multi-phase project, which will expand emergency, inpatient and outpatient services to meet the growing healthcare needs of Lorain County and the surrounding region.

The project builds on Gilbane's long-standing collaboration with Cleveland Clinic and further strengthens the firm's portfolio of complex healthcare projects across the country.

"Healthcare projects require careful planning, collaboration and an unwavering focus on safety and quality," said Bill Helmet, project executive, Gilbane Building. "Our team is committed to delivering this expanded facility in close partnership with Cleveland Clinic, HKS and our trade partners while creating spaces that support patients, caregivers and the community for years to come."

The expansion will add approximately 250,000 square feet of clinical space across the hospital and health center, including:

  • Expansion of the Emergency Department to increase capacity and improve patient flow.
  • Expanded imaging services, including advanced MRI, CT and other diagnostic capabilities.
  • An expanded Cancer Center with enhanced treatment and infusion space and the addition of two new external beam radiation oncology machines.
  • Growth of surgical services, including additional operating rooms at Avon Hospital.
  • Expansion of outpatient care services at the Richard E. Jacobs Health Center.
  • Increased medical-surgical inpatient beds.
  • Expansion of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) to support higher-acuity patients.
  • Construction of a new parking garage.

Together, these enhancements will strengthen Cleveland Clinic's ability to deliver seamless care across emergency, inpatient and outpatient settings while improving access, efficiency and the overall patient experience.

Designed by HKS in collaboration with Cleveland Clinic Buildings + Design and key clinical stakeholders, the project is expected to be completed in 2029.
