Washington, D.C., January 7, 2025 (PAHO) - The Modular Assessment of Essential Conditions (AEC) methodology continues to solidify its role as a key tool for enhancing the quality of health services. Its recent implementation at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH), Belize's primary national referral center, marked a significant milestone as it was applied for the first time in its English version, expanding its potential for adoption in various contexts.
The AEC methodology provides a modular and adaptable framework for comprehensively assessing service delivery conditions in hospitals and health networks. With its practical design, it facilitates the identification of critical areas for improvement and guides the implementation of strategies that strengthen health systems, promoting quality and sustainable care.
At KHMH, the application of the AEC methodology identified key opportunities for optimizing health services. This initiative involved training a team of 12 hospital professionals and engaging representatives from Belize's northern, southern, and western regions. This collaborative effort not only strengthened national capacities but also laid the groundwork for developing integrated, quality-oriented health service networks.
The success achieved in Belize highlights that the AEC methodology transcends its role as a diagnostic tool. It serves as a catalyst for continuous health system improvement and serves as an adaptable model for diverse realities. This experience positions the methodology as a benchmark for assessing and transforming health services in the region and beyond.
The experience at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital underscores that the AEC not only assesses but also drives sustainable change, fostering a culture of quality and excellence in healthcare.
