Representative John W. Mannion (NY-22) Announces Syracuse Mayor Sharon Owens as his Guest for the President's State of the Union Address

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Representative John W. Mannion (NY-22) today announced Syracuse Mayor Sharon Owens will be his guest at the President's State of the Union Address on February 24 in Washington, D.C. She is the first African American and second woman to serve as mayor in the city's history.
Together, Representative Mannion and Mayor Owens will use the State of the Union to deliver a message of government working for the people. They'll highlight their shared commitment to lowering costs for families, creating good-paying jobs, accelerating lead pipe remediation, humane and lawful immigration enforcement, securing resources and implementing them effectively, strengthening public safety, and supporting great schools and neighborhoods.
Representative John W. Mannion said, "Our region is in the midst of a generational transformation, and everyone should benefit. Reimagining I-81, preparing for Micron's historic investment, removing thousands of lead service lines, keeping costs affordable, and strengthening our communities - all of this succeeds when federal and local government are working in lockstep. Mayor Owens and I are committed to a strong partnership that delivers for families and small businesses, for our kids and seniors, and for everyone who calls Central New York and the Mohawk Valley home. We will work with anyone to move this region forward - and we will fight back when policies threaten our constituents' well-being or the rule of law."
Mayor Sharon Owens said, "It's an honor to join Congressman Mannion and I thank him for the invitation to join him at the State of the Union. Syracuse is at a defining moment, a transformation unlike anything we've seen in a generation. I am excited to share our vision for Syracuse's future with other elected officials at the State of the Union and to champion the opportunities ahead. Congressman Mannion and I are united in a commitment to build a region where all individuals, families, including our children, and seniors can thrive, and where our business community can prosper."
Representative Mannion recently secured critical federal investments to support public safety, clean drinking water, and neighborhood revitalization in Syracuse - including $1,031,000 for a Syracuse Police Department mobile command unit to strengthen emergency response coordination, $1,092,000 to replace lead service lines as part of the city's broader effort to remove lead from drinking water, and $850,000 to help the Syracuse Housing Authority advance planning and predevelopment work to revitalize the East Adams neighborhood as part of the I-81 Community Grid transformation.
Last year, Representative Mannion's guest was fifth generation farmer Karin Reeves of Baldwinsville. They worked to draw attention to the importance of SNAP, combatting food insecurity, and promoting policies that support local farmers, rural communities, and small businesses.
