COLUMBUS - Minority Leader Dani Isaacsohn (D-Cincinnati) today released the following statement following another killing by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent in Minneapolis, Minnesota:
"Yesterday, the world witnessed the killing of an American citizen at point blank range by masked, armed ICE agents in Minneapolis. We demand an investigation into what has happened and a prosecution of those who are responsible. But this moment also requires us to join together in a call for freedom and safety that has to cross state borders and transcend party allegiances. We cannot tolerate a federal enforcement strategy that treats communities like battlefields and people like expendable statistics.
Here in Ohio, we've seen random, untrained people barging into daycare centers, putting Ohio children at risk, and ICE agents arresting community members with no criminal histories while they pick up their children from school. We are all less safe because of what is happening in Minneapolis, here in Ohio, and across the country. We are all less free when the government tramples the rights of citizens and lies about it. And we are all less secure when there are no consequences.
Ohioans need elected officials who work to make their lives more affordable, ensuring they will have access to healthcare when they are sick, food when they are hungry, and heat when it gets cold. We have to enforce our laws without resorting to lawlessness from ICE officers. We need order restored to our communities. Americans deserve to live free from the fear of government violence.
Ohio House Democrats are focused on solving problems for our communities, not sowing disorder and chaos. It is time for leaders on the other side of the aisle to start defending American freedoms, serving Ohioans in need, and joining together across party lines to reject the lawlessness from ICE and Washington D.C.," said Leader Isaacsohn.
This follows just weeks after Renee Good, another US citizen, was shot by ICE agents in Minneapolis.
