WASHINGTON, D.C.- Last night, the Trump Administration approved the final export authorizationfor the dangerous, pollution-causing Venture Global's liquefied methane gas export project, CP2 LNG.
If constructed, CP2 would be one of the largest LNG plants in the nation. It would export 20 million metric tons per year of LNG, and the estimated lifecycle greenhouse gas from this methane gas would be more than the annual emissions of 47 million gas-powered cars, or 54 coal-fired power plants. Construction for the project has already been disastrous for the local community of Cameron Parrish, devastating the livelihoods of local fishermen.
In response, Sierra Club Director of Beyond Fossil Fuels Policy Mahyar Sorour released the following statement:
"It's unsurprising that the Trump Administration doesn't care about the people of Cameron Parrish. Throughout this year, Secretary Wright has shown he is willing to sell out the American people in the name of Big Oil and Gas. The facts are clear, LNG exports raise costs to Americans' energy bills, are disastrous for communities like Cameron Parrish, increase public health harms, and perpetuate the climate crisis. It's horrific that while everyday Americans suffer, the Trump Administration's solution is to push forward projects that will deepen that suffering for the sake of making Big Oil and Gas executives richer. We will continue to fight to protect the livelihoods of Americans against the interests of the oil and gas industry."
