April 23, 2026, 4:38 PM

The Gamma Delta Chapter of Eta Sigma Gamma at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville received the Chapter Achievement Award at the Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE) Annual Meeting in Portland, Ore., on April 23. This honor recognizes the chapter's excellence in public health education and service.

"This award highlights the importance of bridging the gap between health education and student engagement at SIUE. Through Eta Sigma Gamma- Delta Chapter, we strive to empower students with practical, accessible health resources that support their academic and personal success. Our goal is to foster a healthier, more informed campus community," said Diksha Negi, senior in Public Health and ESG President.

According to instructor and ESG faculty advisor, Aldara Henderson, MPH, to qualify, chapters must engage in three activities in at least three of Eta Sigma Gamma's four pillars: teaching, service, research, and advocacy. Additionally, they must meet a minimum of six Chapter Management Standards and three Health Education and Promotion Standards.

Chapter Management Standards include:

  • Developing a structured planning process with clear goals and measurable objectives
  • Implementing professional development activities to enhance members' competencies
  • Recruiting and retaining members to ensure chapter continuity
  • Establishing effective communication channels for member engagement
  • Engaging in responsible financial planning to support activities
  • Providing leadership training for officers and committee leaders
  • Implementing structured processes for leadership transitions

Health Education and Promotion Standards require chapters to:

  • Apply foundational health education theories and program planning models
  • Define clear goals and measurable objectives for activities
  • Use appropriate content and delivery methods for target populations
  • Evaluate activities to assess implementation and achievement of objectives

The SOPHE Annual Meeting, themed "Local Roots, Global Impact: Transforming Health through Education," took place April 22 to 24 at the Hilton Portland Downtown.
