Statement from Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre on Hanukkah

Ottawa, ON - The Hon. Pierre Poilievre, Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada and the Official Opposition, released the following statement on Hanukkah:

"Over the next eight days and nights, Jewish families across Canada will gather to celebrate Hanukkah. This holiday forever reminds us of the miracle that allowed a one-day supply of oil to keep Jerusalem's Temple lit.

"Just as the Maccabees famously defeated the Seleucid forces and succeeded in rededicating the Holy Temple in Jerusalem thousands of years ago, we are reminded of the perseverance of the Jewish people and that light will always triumph over darkness.

"As antisemitism rears its ugly head and extremist groups seek to silence the Canadian Jewish community, the menorah will continue to serve as a symbol of dispelling the horrors of hatred and shine its miraculous light in the windows of Jewish homes around the world.

"Throughout history, Jewish people have faced countless oppressors who have sought to destroy their culture and traditions, but each time, Jews resisted, triumphing against all odds. Their resilience has enabled them to practice the same faith, live on the same land, and speak the same language as they did 3,000 years ago.

"It is a time for celebration among family and friends. As you pray and sing, as you prepare latkes and jelly doughnuts, and as the children rejoice in telling the story of Hanukkah and spinning the dreidel, I wish you all a happy Hanukkah.

"Chag Hanukkah Sameach!"
