Denver Animal Shelter to Host Free and Low-Cost Spay and Neuter Event

Published on July 14, 2026

Denver Animal Shelter (DAS) is partnering with Bergen Spay & Neuter Alliance to host a four-day Spay-a-thon that will provide free and low-cost spay and neuter surgeries for Denver-area dogs and cats.

The event will take place July 16-19 at Denver Animal Shelter, 1241 W. Bayaud Ave. Bergen Spay & Neuter Alliance's mobile veterinary unit will perform surgeries throughout the event, helping more pet owners access care that can otherwise be difficult to afford.

The partnership builds on a strong track record of expanding access to affordable veterinary care in Denver. In 2025, Denver Animal Protection and Bergen Spay & Neuter Alliance hosted two high-volume clinics that provided free and low-cost spay and neuter surgeries for 431 animals, including 160 dogs and 271 cats. Bergen returned in January 2026 for another clinic, serving 168 animals. Together, the partnership has provided spay and neuter services for 599 Denver-area pets since the start of 2025, helping reduce unwanted litters and making affordable veterinary care more accessible for families in need. Bergen's services cost just $35 for dogs and $25 for cats, and feral cats are seen at no cost.

Bergen Spay & Neuter Alliance is a nonprofit organization that brings high-quality, low-cost veterinary services directly to communities with limited access to care. Through its mobile surgical unit, the organization provides spay and neuter surgeries, vaccinations, microchips and pet wellness education in partnership with local organizations across Colorado and neighboring states.

As the cost of veterinary care continues to increase, affordable services remain out of reach for many families. Denver Animal Shelter's Community Outreach program works to remove those barriers by offering free spay and neuter surgeries, vaccinations and microchips to eligible pet owners. Demand for these services continues to exceed available resources, making partnerships like this one critical.

Spaying and neutering pets helps prevent unplanned litters, reduces the number of animals entering shelters and supports healthier lives for dogs and cats. By expanding access to these services, Denver Animal Shelter and Bergen Spay & Neuter Alliance are helping more people stay with their pets.
