United Federation of Teachers President Michael Mulgrew announced the union will hold a forum for mayoral candidates on Saturday, May 17, at the union's annual Spring Education Conference.
"We all need to move beyond statements of how much someone 'loves' teachers. Too much is at stake, locally and nationally, for public school students and educators. We need partners who understand the real work we need to do," Mulgrew said.
UFT members will have the opportunity to question candidates. Mayoral candidates who agreed to spend time in public school classrooms and who have completed the UFT's mayoral questionnaire were invited to take part in the forum.
The UFT Spring Conference is an annual event that includes workshops, professional development, and addresses by local, state, and national leaders in education and politics. Over 1,600 UFT members are expected to attend the conference.
The mayoral forum is open to the press and will not be live-streamed.
