*UPDATE* MURDER INVESTIGATION ARREST – 4700 BLOCK OF GREENMEADOW ROAD

Homicide detectives have made an arrest regarding the Nov. 1, 2024 murder a 72-year-old male resident of Long Beach.

Through their investigation, Homicide detectives identified the suspect as William Altpeter, a 38-year-old resident of Idyllwild. On Nov. 14, 2024, Altpeter was located and arrested in the city of Idyllwild by the Riverside County Sheriff's Office Special Weapons and Tactic team.

Search warrants were subsequently served at Alpeter's residence and in the city of Long Beach where items of evidence were located and recovered.

Detectives learned that the victim and Altpeter were known to each other.

The identity of the victim is still being withheld pending a next of kin notification.

The Long Beach Police Department would like to extend its thanks and gratitude to the Riverside County Sheriff's Office Special Weapons and Tactics team for their assistance in apprehending Altpeter, who was transported to the Long Beach city jail where he was booked for murder, and his bail was set at $3,000,000.

Homicide detectives are investigating the murder of a 72-year-old man that occurred on Nov. 1, 2024 in the 4700 block of Greenmeadow Road.

On Nov. 1, 2024 at approximately 8:22 p.m., officers were dispatched to assist the Long Beach Fire Department regarding a possible suicide.

Upon arrival, officers located a male adult victim lying inside his residence with a gunshot wound to the upper body that appeared to be self-inflicted. Long Beach Fire Department personnel determined the man deceased at the scene.

Homicide detectives and the Los Angeles County Department of the Medical Examiner Investigator responded to the scene to investigate the incident. Detectives, in coordination with the Department of the Medical Examiner, determined the wound was not self-inflicted.

Homicide detectives are investigating the motive and circumstances leading up to the shooting and are working to identify a possible suspect(s).

The victim has been identified as a 72-year-old resident of Long Beach. His identity is being withheld pending the next of kin notification.
