Interstate 90 Nighttime Closures Planned for Reconstruction Project at Piedmont (Exit 46)

PIEDMONT, S.D. - Beginning Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2026, eastbound Interstate 90 will be closed nightly from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. through Thursday, Nov. 5, 2026, for the installation of girders for the new overpass bridge at exit 46. Eastbound traffic will be detoured via exit 46 onto Sturgis Road, then to Stagestop Road, and back onto I-90 at exit 48.

This work is part of a project that includes the full reconstruction of exit 46 and portions of Elk Creek Road and Sturgis Road in Piedmont. This multi-year project includes new exit ramps, a new bridge over I-90, elimination of an at-grade railroad crossing on Elk Creek Road by building a bridge over the railroad, replacement of drainage structures, and new concrete pavement on I-90 between exit 44 and mile marker 47.

The prime contractor for this $77.7 million project is Heavy Constructors, Inc. of Rapid City, SD. The overall project completion date is December 2028.
