UNESCO and the Caribbean Court of Justice Host Landmark Webinar on AI, Freedom of Expression and the Rule of Law

The Honorable Mr Justice Winston Anderson, President of the CCJ, underlined the Court's proactive approach, noting that the CCJ has embraced innovation, launching its own AI-based research tool, and issuing a practice direction on artificial Intelligence. But, risks remain, as illustrated by cases where attorneys have cited fictitious case law generated by AI.

Understanding AI is now essential to fulfilling the responsibility to deliver justice efficiently, protect rights, and uphold the rule of law. This training, based on UNESCO's Global Toolkit on AI and the Rule of Law for the Justice Sector , included sessions on the use of AI in judicial processes, and its impact on human rights, while safeguarding judicial independence.

Experts from UNESCO and the UN Special Rapporteur on the Independence of Judges and Lawyers guided discussions on how to apply AI in courts, in compliance with human rights international standards. This webinar is part of UNESCO's flagship Judges' Initiative , which since 2013, has engaged with more than 36,000 judicial actors from over 160 countries.

UNESCO has been equipping them with knowledge and tools to apply international standards on freedom of expression, access to information, and journalists' safety. Through Massive Open Online Courses, regional and on-the-ground workshops and specialised toolkits, the Initiative helps courts adapt to new challenges, from disinformation to AI governance.

Extending UNESCO's work through the partnership with the CCJ continues efforts to ensure that Caribbean judicial actors know how to navigate the digital landscape while safeguarding democratic principles and fundamental rights. It also reinforces collaboration in building capacity to address the opportunities and risks associated with emerging technologies.
