Stay prepared as Spring turns to Summer, Redbirds

May marks Wildfire Awareness Month on the national preparedness calendar and while large wildfires are rare in Illinois, the broader focus is on recognizing how seasonal changes, dry conditions, and increased outdoor activity can impact community safety. For the Redbird community, May also brings warmer temperatures, heavier rain, outdoor events, finals, and graduation - making preparedness especially important.

As spring transitions into summer, consider these key preparedness actions for May:

Stay alert to seasonal weather impacts

May can bring heavy rain, thunderstorms, and localized flooding across central Illinois. Be aware of flooded walkways, parking areas, and roadways during commuting hours, and avoid driving or walking through standing water. Weather conditions should also be considered when planning outdoor meetings, events, or work activities.

Prepare for early-season heat

Warmer temperatures can arrive suddenly in May, particularly affecting those in outdoor or non-climate-controlled environments. Stay hydrated, pace physical activity, use sun protection, and recognize early signs of heat stress.

Keep emergency alerts and workplace contact information updated

Turn on Wireless Emergency Alerts, sign up for ISU Emergency Alerts (students are automatically enrolled), download the Safe Redbirds app, and have multiple ways to receive emergency information - such as NOAA weather radios and local notification systems.

Review departmental and personal preparedness plans

May is an ideal time to review evacuation routes, shelter locations, and communication plans both within your campus buildings and at home. Familiarity with procedures helps reduce confusion and supports quicker, more effective response during real emergencies. This is also a good opportunity to refresh and update emergency kits in preparation for the summer months ahead.

Preparedness supports not only personal safety, but also the continuation of university operations. Taking time now to refresh plans and awareness helps ensure our Redbird community is ready for the changing conditions throughout the season.
