Huntsville awards bid for final phase of Sandra Moon Community Complex project

The City of Huntsville is moving forward with the fourth and final phase of the Sandra Moon Community Complex renovation project that includes the former Grissom High School auditorium as well as other upgrades to accommodate events.

The wide-ranging scope of work also calls for refurbishing the two gymnasiums and enhancing the exterior with landscaping and lighting.

The auditorium that was part of the former Grissom High School will be transformed into a 600-seat theater.

Seating will be reduced in the auditorium to create an intimate 611-seat theater with a new lobby and extensive improvements on back-of-house facilities to accommodate different types of events.

A 300-seat event center will be constructed on the site of the school's lunchroom.

The recreational facilities will include a permanent home for special populations activities. The work will also bring the project area into ADA compliance.

KPS Group of Huntsville is the architect and Fite Building Company of Decatur is the general contractor for the $31.3 million project. Construction is expected to be completed in the first half of 2026.
