HONOLULU, May 23, 2026 - Hawaiian Electric is working to restore power to customers in South Kona on Hawaii Island following last night's earthquake as well as an early morning motor vehicle accident in Keauhou. About 70 of the 1,000 customers who lost power during the earthquake and about 20 customers in Keauhou will remain without power until crews can complete repairs.

Hawaiian Electric's incident management team continues to keep a close watch on wind speeds and humidity levels in the Kawaihae and Waikoloa areas on Hawaii Island, as well as in West Maui and parts of Omaopio and Pulehu in Kahului. A Public Safety Power Shutoff is still possible within the next 24 hours in communities with high exposure to wildfire risk. Customers in these areas are urged to initiate their own emergency plans and prepare for the possibility of outages lasting several hours to days.

The company also reminds the public that downed power lines should be considered as energized and dangerous. Stay at least 30 feet or more away from all power lines. Warn others to stay away. For emergency assistance call 911. For Hawaiian Electric, call our Trouble Line:
