Magnolia House Nominated for Historic Recognition

The historic Magnolia House, 442 Gorrell St., has been nominated for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places, the United States' official list of properties worthy of preservation.

As part of the vetting process, the City seeks public input on the property's qualifications. A public hearing will be held during the Historic Preservation Commission's meeting at 4 pm on Wednesday, January 28, in the Plaza Level Conference Room of the Melvin Municipal Office Building, 300 W. Washington St.

Greensboro's City Council will then review the nomination at its February 3 meeting prior to its consideration by the North Carolina National Register Advisory Committee in February. From there, the nomination moves to the National Park Service for final consideration.

When a property is listed in the National Register, the owner becomes eligible for historic rehabilitation income tax credits. Listing does not restrict the owner's use of private funds to maintain or alter their property.

Built in 1889, The Magnolia House was one of 14 Greensboro businesses listed in the Green Book. The property served as a popular destination for Black travelers from 1955-1961, and now operates as a boutique hotel, restaurant, and event venue. It was previously recognized for its historic contributions in 1991, as part of South Greensboro's successful nomination into the National Register.

If selected, the Magnolia House will join 43 Greensboro properties, 13 districts, and three National Historic Landmarks to receive this historic designation. Learn more about the City's historic preservation efforts at https://www.greensboro-nc.gov/HPC. Questions? Contact [email protected].
