Driver in fatal traffic crash on Union Boulevard and Parkside Drive identified

On May 8, 2026, at approximately 10:05 a.m., the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) was notified of a two-vehicle traffic crash near Union Boulevard and Parkside Drive. Upon officers' arrival, they discovered a vehicle had made a left turn at the intersection from southbound Union Boulevard to eastbound Parkside Drive and collided with a vehicle traveling northbound on Union Boulevard in the right through lane of the intersection. The driver of the northbound vehicle was transported from the scene to a local area hospital for his reported injuries.

On May 14, 2026, CSPD was notified by the El Paso County Coroner's Office that the driver of the northbound vehicle succumbed to his injuries while in the hospital. He was identified as 80-year-old Paul Montoya.

Due to the circumstances of this crash, the CSPD Major Crash Team (MCT) was notified and is now assisting with the investigation. Speed is not suspected to be a contributing factor. No formal charges have been filed at this time. This remains an open and active investigation.

This incident marks the 21st traffic fatality in Colorado Springs in 2026. At this time last year, the city experienced 14 traffic fatalities. Over the past 365 days, there have been 65 traffic-related fatalities within the city.
