Rep. Gillen Announces Lynbrook Public Library’s Addition to the National Register of Historic Places

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Congresswoman Laura Gillen (NY-04) released the following statement after the Lynbrook Public Library was listedon the National Register of Historic Places. Earlier this year, Gillen called onthe National Park Service to name the nearly century-old institution to the National Register of Historic Places, making it eligible for key federal and state preservation funding:

"I am delighted to announce that the Lynbrook Public Library has been formally named to the National Register of Historic Places, honoring its architectural beauty, civic legacy and the important role it has played in the lives of Lynbrook residents," said Congresswoman Laura Gillen. "I was proud to work with Lynbrook Mayor Alan Beach and Library Director Robyn Gilloon to advocate for this well-deserved recognition and personally called on the National Park Service to elevate the library to the National Register earlier this year. Today's exciting announcement not only recognizes our shared history on Long Island but also makes the Lynbrook Public Library eligible for key preservation funding that will ensure this treasured cornerstone of our community remains relevant well into our future."

"The Library is one of Lynbrook's architectural treasures and has played a significant role in many cultural and political events of our nation" said Mayor Alan Beach.

"It is extremely exciting and fitting for the Lynbrook Library to be placed on the National Register of Historic Places," said Lynbrook Public Library Director Robyn Gilloon. "Discussions have begun on how to celebrate the 100th year of the Lynbrook Library in 2029. Becoming part of the Historic Register adds to the celebration. We hear all too often that libraries are going away, but in Lynbrook this is far from true. The Lynbrook Library is still going strong and is still a cornerstone of literacy for the residents. This is one of the core values from 100 years ago. Many core values in libraries still hold true today while still updating and upgrading to keep up with the changing times and technologies. Thank you Representative Gillen, Mayor Beach, The Lynbrook Village Board and the Lynbrook Library board for all your support and assistance."

"As a community it is important to preserve our past," said Deputy Mayor Michael Hawxhurst."We are grateful that the NYS Historic Preservation Office nominated our application and are excited the National Park Service added the Library to National List of Historic Places"

Built in 1929 and designed by architect Hugh Tallant, the library stands as a beaming example of Neoclassical Revival architecture and played a unique role in the women's suffrage movement by hosting clubs and civic groups in the early 20th century. Over the years, the Lynbrook community has demonstrated a strong commitment to preserving and maintaining this historic building. The building's architecture reflects the ideals of the Public Library Movement, and the library helped play an important role in the women's suffrage movement in the early 20th century by hosting multiple women's clubs and suffrage volunteer groups.

The Library's nomination was announced by New York State in March, and it was submitted to the National Park Service on July 18. Gillen wrote to National Park Service Acting Director Jessica Bowron that month calling for the library's inclusion onto the National Register.
