Legal advisors in Brussels discuss the role of fundamental rights

The Austrian Ambassador to the EU convened the exchange to allow for an informal exchange among legal advisors of all Permanent Representations of the EU Member States in Brussels.

The discussion was kicked off by a presentation of the 2026 Rule of Law Report by the European Commission. This was followed by a presentation of the early findings of an upcoming FRA report that looks into how fundamental rights are used to protect and promote the rule of law.

The report will be published at the end of the year. It follows from an expert meeting the agency held end of 2025 and builds on a data collection of relevant case law carried out in all Member States and the FRA's 3 observer countries. The report takes as starting point the updated rule of law checklist to which it had contributed in 2025.

The agency Also contributed to an inter-institutional 'Rule of Law explainer ' that was launched in June and will provide assistance to the upcoming national rule of law dialogue in Greece on 25 November.
