South Salem Commuter Rail Stop Project Community Update Meeting

Tuesday, January 28, 2025

6:00 - 7:30 PM

Jean A. Levesque Community Life Center - 401 Bridge Street

The City of Salem, Salem State University, Mass General Brigham Salem Hospital, and The Salem Partnership have worked collaboratively to investigate and advance the concept of a South Salem Commuter Rail Stop, on the Newburyport/Rockport line, which would be the second stop in Salem - the busiest commuter rail station outside of Boston. The location of the proposed stop is intentionally situated between Canal Street and Jefferson Avenue to service Salem's largest employers, Salem State University, Mass General Brigham Salem Hospital.

The City of Salem received Federal Community Project Funding to undertake the Conceptual Design Phase (15% design level) for this project. A neighborhood meeting was held in June to present the initial conceptual plan to the neighborhood for review. Neighbors shared concerns and suggestions for improvements to the proposed plan.

Since the first neighborhood meeting, the City's engineering team has worked to address many of the concerns that were raised at the initial meeting. The updated plans will be presented at the Community Update Meeting.

Lastly, in June 2024, the City secured $2.7 million in federal funding to continue the design work to 100%. This design work will take place over the next two to three years and include additional community meetings.

Following the meeting, plans will be available to review at: http://www.salemma.gov/southsalemtrain
