Monmouth University was named No. 3 on a list of colleges closest to the beach in the United States by BroBible, placing the University among 17 schools nationwide. Monmouth trailed only Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi and the University of California, Santa Barbara, and was the only New Jersey institution to make the list, in a field otherwise dominated by schools in California and Florida.
BroBible's Cass Anderson argues that a beachfront college provides intangibles "that can have a very real impact on one's mood." Monmouth's West Long Branch campus sits roughly a mile from the Long Branch beaches.
Beyond offering a scenic shoreline, Monmouth's beach proximity anchors one of the University's signature academic strengths: its Marine and Environmental Biology and Policy program and the Urban Coast Institute, where students and faculty conduct hands-on research on coastal ecosystems, water quality, and ocean policy in the very waters just beyond campus. What a ranking measures in miles, Monmouth students experience as a living laboratory-one that stays open long after beach season ends.
With a central location within easy reach of both New York City and Philadelphia, Monmouth's unique coastal setting simultaneously gives students a scenic beach reprieve, access to major cities, and opportunities for hands-on coastal learning and research.
