Buena Park Announces Retirement of Police Chief Frank E. Nunes and Interim Chief Appointment

On December 18, 2025, Buena Park Police Chief, Frank E. Nunes, retired after nearly 29 years of service with the Buena Park Police Department.

Chief Frank Nunes started his career of service in September 1989 when he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. Frank served his country with distinction and achieved the rank of Sergeant. His military highlights include being a member of the 2nd Light Armored Infantry Battalion during Operations Desert Shield and Storm. This unit was responsible for breaching the Kuwaiti border with Saudi Arabia and liberating key infrastructure in Kuwait. Frank earned his combat action ribbon and received numerous unit citations.

Chief Nunes started his law enforcement career in November 1993 as a police officer with the Sierra Madre Police Department. After three and half years of service with Sierra Madre PD, Frank decided to find a bigger challenge and moved to the Buena Park Police in April 1997.
"Throughout his career, Chief Nunes exemplified what it means to serve with integrity, an innovative vision for fighting crime, and care for our community," said Mayor Connor Traut. "Buena Park is safer and stronger because of his leadership."

During his over 30-year career with both agencies, Chief Nunes has worked a variety of assignments. These assignments include patrol, field training officer, gang investigator, burglary detective, robbery/homicide detective, traffic, professional standards, administrative services commander and SWAT. Frank promoted through the ranks of the department and received his appointment as Chief of Police in October 2022.

Chief Nunes is a two-time recipient of the department's award of merit, lifesaving award and supervisor/manager of the year awards. He has received several awards and commendations from local, state and federal agencies, and legislatures.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Frank possesses a Master's of Public Administration from National University.

Following Chief Nunes retirement, Captain Bradley Geyer will assume the role of Police Chief on an interim basis effective immediately. Captain Geyer has served the Department for nearly 28 years, beginning his career at Buena Park as a Police Officer recruit in February 1998.
