On May 11, 2026, Director-General of the Department of Asian Affairs of the Foreign Ministry Liu Jinsong held a new round of China-EU consultations on Asian affairs with the newly appointed Managing Director of the Department for Asia and the Pacific of the European External Action Service Erik Kurzweil in Beijing. The two sides exchanged views on the situation in Asia, their respective regional policies, and regional hotspot issues of mutual concern. Liu stated that Asia is currently a highland of peace, manufacturing, high technology, markets, and regional cooperation, but it also faces numerous challenges. Quoting the saying, "Butterflies dance with the wind, while eagles soar against it", he expressed the hope that the European side would uphold strategic autonomy and play a constructive role in the peace and development of the Asia-Pacific region. Kurzweil stated that EU countries have close economic ties with the Asia-Pacific region. The EU is willing to strengthen exchanges with China on Asia-Pacific affairs, enhance mutual understanding, and provide greater stability for the region and the world.
