Kelly, Gallego Demand an End to DHS’ Sham Investigation of 2020 Arizona Election

Arizona Senators Mark Kelly and Ruben Gallego demanded an immediate end to the Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) investigation into the 2020 presidential election results in Arizona.

"The election was the subject of multiple failed lawsuits and investigations and audits that revealed no evidence of fraud. Deploying agents who should be focused on targeting criminals to investigate debunked claims of election fraud makes Americans less safe and raises serious questions about the legitimacy of the investigation," the Senators wrote in a letter to DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin. "Accordingly, we request you end the probe immediately and release all documents, communications, and information relating to the Department's motivations for initiating this improper investigation."

In February, then-Secretary Kristi Noem held an event purportedly focused on election security at a DHS Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) office in Scottsdale, Arizona. Shortly after, the FBI seized records related to the so-called audit of the 2020 election results in Maricopa County as part of a probe into the state's election results-an effort seemingly connected to President Trump's baseless and repeatedly debunked claims that the 2020 presidential election was stolen.

"As an investigative branch, HSI is tasked with investigating crimes like drug trafficking, human smuggling, and child exploitation," the Senators continued. "Investigating unfounded claims of voter fraud is not part of the agency's mission and wastes valuable skills that should be used to keep Americans safe."

Given the serious concerns raised by DHS' decision to open an investigation for purely political purposes, the Senators also requested the release of all documents, communications, and information relating to the Department's motivations for initiating this improper investigation.
