MILLS, Wyo. - The Bureau of Reclamation will begin its annual filling of Alcova Reservoir on Wednesday, April 1, increasing water levels by about 10 feet during April as part of seasonal operations that support irrigation for approximately 24,000 acres of farmland near Casper.
Recreationists and visitors are urged to use caution as rising water levels may create changing and potentially hazardous conditions around the reservoir.
Water levels are expected to reach the summer irrigation operating level of about 5,498 feet, plus or minus 1 foot. The reservoir will remain at that level from May 1 through Sept. 30 to support deliveries to the Casper-Alcova Irrigation District.
As water levels rise, shoreline conditions, boat ramps, and submerged hazards may shift or become less visible. Visitors should remain aware of changing conditions and take appropriate safety precautions while boating, fishing, or recreating near the water.
Alcova Dam serves as a diversion structure, directing water into the Casper Canal, which stretches about 59 miles and delivers irrigation water that supports local agriculture and regional food production.
Each year, reservoir levels are lowered during the winter to reduce the risk of ice damage to the canal diversion structure before refilling begins in the spring.
