First Seasonal Leaf Blower Regulation Ends September 30, 2026

On June 1, Lower Merion Township implemented the first seasonal restriction of its Gas-Powered Leaf Blower regulations, limiting gas powered leaf blower usage through September 30, 2026. This is a part of the Township's ongoing efforts to build a cleaner and healthier community for all.

The regulations include a four-year phase-in. Following this year's restrictions, expanded seasonal restrictions will take place in 2027 and 2028, followed by a permanent, full-year ban in 2029.

Even though the first seasonal restriction ends on October 1, it is important to be aware of actions you can take this fall to practice sustainable landscaping and lawn maintenance.

Below are three practices you can take to help maintain a healthy community:

1. Leave the Leaves

   Leaving leaves where they fall and grass clippings where they are mowed returns nutrients to the soil through decomposition and support a healthier and more sustainable lawn.

2. Mulch Leaves and Grass Clippings

   You can also create mulch by mowing over leaves and lawn clippings. This practice saves time, speeds up decomposition, and naturally feeds the soil. Be sure to point the mower's chute into your lawn to reduce the need to clean debris off paved areas.

3. Go Back to the Basics - Brooms & Rakes

If you still want to move lawn debris, consider raking and sweeping. Rakes and brooms are simple tools that are quieter, cleaner, and offer a great, low-impact way to stay active. Manual tools also require no gasoline, oil, electricity, or costly engine maintenance. Electric leaf blowers are also an option.

Even though this year's seasonal restrictions on gas powered leaf blowers are ending, sustainable landscaping practices are relatively easy for anyone to do throughout the year.
