House Republicans Vote to Strengthen National Security and Protect Americans’ Privacy

WASHINGTON
- House Republicans passed S. 1318, the Foreign Intelligence Accountability Act. This legislation preserves critical foreign intelligence capabilities while adding stronger safeguards to protect Americans' civil liberties.

House Republican Conference Chairwoman Lisa McClain (R-Mich.) released the following statement:

"This bill delivers on multiple fronts: locking in America's security infrastructure, ending backdoor surveillance, and providing real accountability," Chairwoman McClain said. "Americans shouldn't have to choose between security and privacy. House Republicans have preserved the tools our intelligence agencies need to stop real threats, while putting an end to any abuse of those tools against American citizens."

This bill extends Section 702 for three years and explicitly prohibits targeting U.S. citizens without a court-approved warrant. It requires written justification and attorney approval for any FBI query involving U.S. person data, increases penalties for abuse, and expands congressional oversight of FISC court proceedings.
