Fundamentals of day to day HR in practice: Dealing with Toxic Workplace Behaviour

A toxic workplace is unhealthy for your people and for your organisation.

Toxic workplaces can be found in a single department, in multiple areas or across an entire organisation.

Toxic workplace behaviour can exist at all levels in the workplace. Where left unaddressed, such behaviour can have negative impacts on a business and its employees, including low morale, reduced productivity, absenteeism and turnover.

Employers may also face legal risks where certain behaviours have not been properly managed.

It is critical for businesses to ensure that:

  • Employees understand the business's position on unacceptable behaviour;
  • Negative behaviours are identified and addressed promptly; and
  • Measures taken to address behaviour are reasonable and consistent with requirements outlined in an industrial instrument / employment contract / policy or procedure.

It is also crucial that supervisors and managers uphold the employer's position and are equipped with the necessary tools to confidently address any concerns and that individual staff members are equipped and supported to call out and notify toxic behaviour.

This webinar provided practical guidance and recommendations on:

  • Identifying toxic workplace behaviours;
  • Legal and workplace impacts of toxic behaviours;
  • Legal obligations to address and manage certain types of behaviour;
  • How to address toxic behaviours;
  • Prevention and setting the expectations of behaviour.

Case studies were highlighted where employers have got it right and not-so-right and what the implications can be.
