Security updates coming to eCourts applications

Beginning September 21, 2025, users of eCourts applications, including eFiling, Online Bar Admissions, and Continuing Legal Education Reporting, will be required to complete an added verification step during login. The change introduces two-factor authentication (2FA) as part of a broader effort to strengthen user account security across Wisconsin Court System platforms.

Two-factor authentication is a common practice in secure online systems. It requires users to enter a one-time six-digit code sent to a verified email address or mobile phone after entering their username and password. The measure is intended to reduce the risk of unauthorized access, particularly in cases where login credentials are compromised.

Consolidated Court Automation Programs (CCAP) notes the move aligns the court system's authentication process with practices already in place in banking, healthcare, and other high-security sectors. The new process also eliminates the use of security questions for account recovery, a method considered increasingly vulnerable to attack.

The court system encourages users to review their contact information to ensure they can receive authentication codes. Attorneys and other users who delegate account-related tasks to staff are advised to use existing delegation tools rather than share login credentials. Instructions for setting up delegation access are available through the eFiling support site.

In addition to the security enhancements, users will see a refreshed interface, expanded self-service tools, and an easier process for updating usernames.

A short video demonstrating the updated login process is available here.
