Reflecting on the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Dr. William Lofton Turner | 01/15/2025

As we reflect on the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., his profound words resonate deeply: "Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?'" This enduring call to action invites us to examine how we extend grace, foster belonging and build unity within our communities and beyond.

Dr. King's message is both a challenge and an opportunity. Rooted in his unwavering faith and belief in the interconnectedness of humanity, these words remind us that our actions toward others define the character of our lives. Service is not simply an act of kindness but a reflection of grace-the unmerited favor that we are called to extend to one another, just as it has been extended to us.

Belonging and unity are cultivated when we prioritize others, valuing their stories, perspectives and dignity. Dr. King's vision for a just and equitable society begins with each of us embracing our shared humanity and committing to actions that uplift and unify. Whether mentoring a student, collaborating with a colleague or engaging with our neighbors, every act of service strengthens the bonds of community and builds a culture where all feel seen, valued and included.

As we continue our work in diversity, belonging and unity, let us answer Dr. King's question with intentionality and courage. Together, through grace-filled service, we can create a space where everyone at Lipscomb thrives as an image-bearer of God, living in harmony and mutual respect.

In unity and service,

William Lofton Turner Ph.D.
