SACRAMENTO - Today, Controller Cohen issued a statement on the passing of former Senate President pro Tem John Burton:

"California has lost a true giant in public service with the passing of former Senate President pro Tempore John Burton. Known to many as the lion of the Senate, John's fierce advocacy, witty remarks, and unshakable commitment to justice left an indelible mark on our state.

From championing protections for working families and vulnerable communities to shaping policies that advanced equity and opportunity, John's leadership embodied both courage and compassion. He never shied away from a fight when it came to doing what was right for Californians, and he carried that same tenacity into his philanthropic work long after leaving office.

I join all Californians in mourning his passing and celebrating his unmatched legacy of service. My deepest condolences go to his family, friends, and all who were inspired by his work. The roar of this lion will continue to echo through California's halls of justice and democracy for generations to come."
