January 16, 2026

The "heart and soul" of Campbell Divinity School. The "backbone" of the administrative team. The "glue that holds it all together."

There are just a few of the descriptions of Elaine Dawson, administrative assistant for academics at the Divinity School and the most recent recipient of the Cherished Camel Award. Launched in the fall under new President William M. Downs, the award honors Campbell staff for "exceptional performance, daily dedication and initiative."

Each recipient receives a $100 gift card, a certificate and campus-wide recognition for their contributions.

Nominated by her co-workers, Dawson has been at Campbell University for over 20 years. Wrote one of her colleagues: "Elaine is the glue that holds our team together. She is willing to aid any staff or faculty member in whatever they need. The chairs in her office are often filled with faculty and staff asking questions or just checking in. … This extends beyond our department to those in education and Christian studies, as Elaine has created a sense of collegiality with all those in Taylor Hall."

Wrote another: "Elaine's office is the hub of the Divinity School. She has a comfy space, knowledge and care, and snacks that keep people throughout Taylor Hall going. Her long tenure gives her the foundation to welcome folks - new and old - from Divinity and otherwise. We are beyond grateful that she is on our team."

Dawson said she was "very honored" to receive the award.

"I'm grateful to work alongside the wonderful faculty and staff of the Divinity School," she said.
