The Northern Michigan University Quiz Bowl squad A recently finished in a tie for third place out of 12 teams at the National Academic Quiz Team (NAQT) sectional championship, which was held online.
Squad A's team members include graduate student Josh Pletcher, December graduate Libby Myren, senior Jeannine Doyle and junior Liam Ulland-Joy. The team finished with an 8-3 record, resulting in a tie for third place with the University of California-Santa Barbara. Notre Dame swept the top two spots in the round.
Pletcher led the squad with 50 points per game, followed by Ulland-Joy with 40. Three other squads from NMU also participated in the tournament, including the NMU D squad, which finished in 8th place.
"This is my fourth year playing for the NMU quiz bowl team and I think the best part is the friends I have made on the team," said Doyle. "It is a great group of people who have diverse interests and all share a common love of knowledge. We are always taking new players. You can come once a month, twice a week or once a semester and will always be welcome. I always encourage people to try it out."
NMU Quiz Bowl team members, coached by Professor Michael Joy, are now waiting to see if they qualify for the national competition. In the meantime, they are gearing up for an event against Michigan Tech this spring, when they hope to take back the Superior Cup.
