From Remembrance to the road: CAF contingent completes 2026 Nijmegen Marches

Thirty-two members of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) returned from the Netherlands wearing the coveted Nijmegen Cross after successfully completing more than 160 kilometres over four days during the 2026 International Four Days Marches Nijmegen. Representing Canada across three teams, the contingent once again demonstrated endurance, professionalism, and international partnership during one of the world's most unique military events.

The week began at Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetery, where the contingent honoured the 2,338 Canadians, and all 2,619 Commonwealth and Allied service members, who rest there after giving their lives during the liberation of Europe and the Netherlands in the Second World War. Joined by Canadian and Dutch dignitaries, allied militaries, veterans, and local communities, participants took part in the Act of Remembrance, the sounding of the Last Post, wreath laying, and two minutes of silence. Later in the week, the contingent again paused during the march to conduct a remembrance ceremony at the Groesbeek Airborne Memorial, reinforcing the enduring connection between the event and those whose sacrifice made today's freedoms possible.

The marches themselves showcased the remarkable hospitality of the Dutch people. From villages decorated in Canadian colours to thousands of spectators lining the route, participants were encouraged every step of the way by enthusiastic crowds. Members of a Canadian Armed Forces Band further strengthened Canada's presence by performing at Camp Heumensoord, in communities along the route, and during the finish celebrations. On the final day, Lieutenant-General Mike Smith, Canada's Military Representative to NATO, attended the start point, received the salute from the contingent, and joined one of the Canadian teams for part of the day's march, underscoring the importance of the event to the Canadian Armed Forces.

Every member of the Canadian contingent successfully completed the event, earning the Nijmegen Cross in recognition of their achievement. Their success reflected months of preparation and the outstanding support provided throughout the week by dedicated medical staff, Canadian Forces Morale and Welfare Services Staff, and support staff from across Europe and Canada, whose professionalism ensured participants remained healthy, prepared, and focused throughout the challenge.

"This event is about much more than the kilometres we walk," said Lieutenant-Colonel Mike Watson, Commander of the 2026 CAF Nijmegen Contingent. "It is an opportunity to honour those who served before us, strengthen friendships with our allies, and proudly represent Canada on the international stage."

As another successful Canadian contingent crossed the finish line in Nijmegen, the medals represented more than the completion of a physical challenge. They reflected remembrance, teamwork, and the enduring relationships that continue to unite Canada with allies and the Dutch people more than 80 years after liberation. The 2026 contingent hopes its experience will encourage more Canadian Armed Forces members to take on the challenge in future years and experience one of the military's most rewarding traditions for themselves.
