Ewing Park’s Annual Lilac Bloom Has Arrived

Des Moines, Iowa - Tuesday, April 21, 2026 - A vibrant display of spring color is about to unfold at one of Des Moines' most cherished destinations. The Ewing Park Lilac Arboretum, now in its 79th year, is expected to reach peak bloom next weekend, and visitors are invited to experience the seasonal spectacle.

Spanning 35 scenic acres, the arboretum features more than 1,000 lilac shrubs representing over 250 unique varieties. From rich purples to delicate pinks and crisp whites, the collection offers a fragrant and visually stunning celebration of spring in Central Iowa.

"This is one of the city's most beloved spring traditions," said Julie Hempel of the City of Des Moines Parks and Recreation Department. "There's nothing quite like walking through the arboretum when the lilacs are in full bloom."

The lilac overlo-ok and parking area will be open daily from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Visitors are encouraged to plan ahead, as peak bloom often draws large crowds.

The entrance to Harry Piper Parkway is located just south of Porter Avenue on the west side of Indianola Road. The roadway will remain open to vehicle traffic through May 9. Visitors are asked to use caution and share the space with other park goers, trail users and disc golfers.

Originally part of a 357-acre farm, the land was donated to the City of Des Moines in 1937 and later developed into the city's largest public park. In 1939, 35 acres were designated for the lilac garden, which officially opened to the public in 1947.

The Ewing Park Lilac Arboretum is the perfect destination for plant lovers, photographers, and anyone seeking a peaceful outdoor escape as spring reaches its peak in Des Moines.
