Warner, Kaine Announce More Than $5 Million in Federal Funding to Modernize 4 Virginia Airports

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senators Mark R. Warner and Tim Kaine (both D-VA) announced $5,693,508 in federal grant funding for infrastructure upgrades to four Virginia airports. This funding is awarded through the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) Airport Infrastructure Grant (AIG) program for FY26, which is made possible by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law that the senators helped negotiate and pass.

"The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law is the gift that keeps on giving, continuing to make Virginia's airports safer and more efficient for the travelers that move through them. We're thrilled to announce more federal dollars that will modernize airports across the Commonwealth," said the senators.

The program grants will be distributed as follows:

  • $2,889,887 for the Capital Region Airport Commission to update the existing airport master plan study at Richmond International Airport.
  • $2,065,750 for the town of Leesburg to fund phase 2 of a project at Leesburg Executive Airport to construct a new sponsor-owned FAA contract tower and acquire installs eligible equipment.
  • $675,000 for the city of Manassas to fund a portion of the project at Manassas Regional Airport to reconstruct 1,500 feet of existing airport hangar and airport traffic control tower access road that becomes unusable during weather events.
  • $62,871 for the city of Danville to fund phase 1 of a project at Danville Regional Airport to construct a new, non-exclusive hanger for aircraft storage to assist the airport in becoming as self-sustaining as possible by generating revenue.

Warner and Kaine have been fierce supporters of efforts to modernize and improve Virginia's airports. Earlier this month, the senators announced more than $73 million in federal funding to improve 3 Virginia airports and $21 million to upgrade 8 Virginia airports. Last year, the senators announced almost $106 million in federal funding for airports across the Commonwealth. Many of these grants were made possible by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, legislation that has secured billions in federal funding for airport infrastructure since 2021.
