It was a bittersweet ceremony for the Independence Police Department last week. Six of our officers received awards at the Metropolitan Chiefs and Sheriffs Association's 53rd Annual Awards for Valor ceremony.

Three of our officers were named Officers of the Year - Officer Steven Thompson, Officer Luke Buchanan, and the late Officer Cody Allen. All three responded to a shooting on February 29th, when Jackson County Process Server Drexel Mack served an eviction notice.

Officer Cody Allen selflessly gave his life that day. Officer Buchanan suffered a gunshot wound to the stomach and Officer Thompson's arm was grazed with a bullet. Both made full recoveries and returned to the line of duty. On Thursday, they received the Gold Award for Valor and Officers of the Year awards. Officer Allen's widow accepted the Officer of the Year award on Office Allen's behalf.

Sgt. Emily Kennon and Officer Luis Virgil received the Bronze Award of Valor. They responded to a request for a welfare check on an Independence resident and discovered her unconscious; because of their efforts, she is still alive today.

Officer Allyx McCoy received the Life-Saving Award for her quick thinking. She applied a tourniquet to an Independence resident who had been shot in the leg; her efforts saved his leg and life.

Congratulations to our Independence Police Officers who were recognized for their courage, live-saving actions, and service to our community at this year's Metropolitan Chiefs and Sheriffs Association's 53rd Annual Awards for Valor ceremony. And thank you to all our officers who protect our community every day.
