Aurora older adults are invited to raise their voice at a series of town halls

Older adults in Aurora, ages 50 and older, are invited to provide their feedback about recreation programs they would like to see throughout the city at a series of town halls. "Speak Up, Shape Up" is an initiative created by Peirce Elsberry, a recreation specialist for the city.

At the town halls older adults can learn about current recreation programs, share their ideas and connect with members of their community. The goal of the program is for the community to come together and build something great.

"These town halls are about listening to the voices of our older adult community. We want to make sure our recreation programs reflect what matters most to them whether that's wellness, social connection, or simply having fun; by working together, we can build opportunities that help older adults in Aurora thrive," Elsberry said.

The city of Aurora opened the Aurora Center for Active Adults, located off of 30 W. Del Mar Circle back in 1980 to serve the recreational needs of the older adult community. Since that time the city has grown and the needs of the older adult community in Aurora along with it. Thanks to the findings found in the Aurora 2024 Older Adult Assessment, the city is expanding its recreational offerings geared towards the ages 50 and older crowd to recreation centers across the city.

  • Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2 to 4 p.m., Southeast Recreation Center and Fieldhouse, 25400 E. Alexander Drive
