County Commissioners proclaim
September 2025 Suicide Prevention Month
FREEHOLD, NJ - The Monmouth County Board of County Commissioners has proclaimed September 2025 as Suicide Prevention Month in Monmouth County.
"Proclaiming September as Suicide Prevention Month is an example of the ways Monmouth County is trying to end the stigma around mental health," said Commissioner Director Thomas A. Arnone. "It creates space for honest conversation, strengthens compassion and encourages those in crisis to seek help."
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in New Jersey, suicide ranks as the third leading cause of death among youth and young adults (ages 10-24) and the overall trend has shown an increase over the past decade.
"This month allows the community to come together and support mental wellness, honor survivors, and remember those we have lost to suicide," said Commissioner Deputy Director Susan M. Kiley, liaison to the Department of Health and Human Services. "Through public outreach, we can reduce stigma around the topic and build hope for those struggling with their mental health."
Individuals may contact 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline to get help from a crisis counselor. Veterans or service members can contact the Veterans Crisis Line by calling 988 and pressing 1, texting 838255, or chatting online at www.veteranscrisisline.net.
Individuals in crisis may also find assistance at Vet2Vet (1-866-VETS-NJ-4 or 1-866-838-7654) for veterans and their families; Cop2Cop (1-866-COP-2-COP or 1-866-267-2267) for law enforcement officers and their families (via phone or chat online at www.njcop2cop.com); and 2ndFLOOR Youth Helpline (1-888-222-2228) for youth (via phone, text, or chat online at www.2ndfloor.org.
