Today, 9 March, the Mayor of Crawley, Councillor Sharmila Sivarajah, and Leader of Crawley Borough Council, Councillor Michael Jones, raised the Commonwealth Flag at the Town Hall. They were joined by local Crawley councillors who have links to other Commonwealth countries, Councillor Yasmin Khan, Cabinet member for Public Protection, and Councillor Maureen Mwagale, to celebrate the occasion.
This year, the theme of Commonwealth Day is 'Unlocking opportunities together for a prosperous Commonwealth' which calls for the 56 Commonwealth independent member countries to rally together to face today's challenges and unlock opportunities that can deliver shared and lasting prosperity for their people.
Commonwealth Day is an opportunity for us to come together with millions of people from Africa, Asia, the Americas, Europe and the Pacific to celebrate the diversity, unity and shared values of our Commonwealth family. I am proud to have raised the Commonwealth Flag to mark the occasion today.
Councillor Sharmila Sivarajah
Mayor of Crawley
The Commonwealth represents a remarkable community of nations built on cooperation and mutual respect. Raising the flag at the Town Hall is a meaningful reminder of our shared purpose and the values we uphold here in Crawley.
Councillor Michael Jones
Leader of Crawley Borough Council
