Washington, D.C. - Today, Congressman Bennie G. Thompson (MS-02) announced that the City of Jackson has been selected to receive $100 million in federal funding through the U.S. Department of Justice's Model Cities Initiative. The award will support comprehensive public safety improvements and help address challenges affecting Jackson residents and neighborhoods. Congressman Thompson joined members of the Mississippi Congressional Delegation in a letter urging U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche to direct funding to Jackson through the DOJ Model Cities Initiative. The initiative takes a comprehensive approach to public safety by bringing together local government, law enforcement agencies, and community partners to develop strategies that address crime and improve quality of life. "Public safety is essential to the health and success of any community. The people of Jackson deserve safe neighborhoods, effective law enforcement, and access to the resources that help prevent crime before it happens, said Congressman Thompson. "This $100 million investment will give the city an opportunity to strengthen its public safety efforts while addressing some of the underlying challenges that affect our communities. I am pleased to see Jackson receive this funding, and I look forward to seeing how these resources will benefit residents across our capital city." The $100 million award will support the City of Jackson's efforts to strengthen law enforcement, improve crisis response, expand mental health services, address substance abuse, and invest in programs aimed at reducing crime and reducing repeat offenses.
