63rd Session

Enhanced Interactive dialogue on reports of the High Commissioner and Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar

7 September 2026

EU statement

Mr/Ms (Vice) President,

The EU thanks the panellists and welcomes the High Commissioner and the IIMM's reports and updates.

9 years since the brutal repression in Rakhine, and 5 years since the 2021 military coup, the frequency and intensity of war crimes and crimes against humanity, committed primarily by the Myanmar military, keeps escalating. The Rohingya remain subjected to systematic discrimination with absolute impunity.

Forced conscription and the continued access of the Myanmar military to arms count among the key drivers of the deterioration of the human rights crisis.

The increased airstrikes by the Myanmar military remain the main cause of civilian deaths.

The EU does not recognise any elections that are neither free nor fair and that aim to legitimise the military without meeting the requirements of a democratic process.

Resolving the crisis in Myanmar requires a transparent, inclusive and credible democratic path. The EU will continue to support the United Nations' and ASEAN's efforts, including the full implementation of UNSC resolution 2669 and ASEAN's Five-Point Consensus.

A sustainable solution also requires justice and accountability for all human rights violations and abuses, including sexual and gender-based violence. In that regard, the role of the IIMM is key.

We would like to ask the panelists:

What concrete action by UN member states would most contribute to peace and reconciliation?

Thank you.
