LOS ANGELES - Equality California, the nation's largest statewide LGBTQ+ civil rights organization, today announced its endorsement of Proposition 50, the Election Rigging Response Act, a critical ballot measure that will ensure fair representation in Congress and protect our democracy from Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans' unprecedented attempts to steal congressional seats in 2026.
"Donald Trump and his allies in Texas and other far-right-controlled states are waging an all-out assault on our democracy. They are trying to rig congressional maps to seize control of the House of Representatives - no matter how the people vote," said Equality California Executive Director Tony Hoang. "California has a duty to lead. Proposition 50 levels the playing field, protects fair redistricting, and makes sure voters - not politicians - hold the power. Equality California is proud to stand with Governor Newsom, President Obama, Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi, and so many others in urging Californians to vote YES on Proposition 50 this November.
LGBTQ+ people have always been on the frontlines when our democracy is under attack - because when extremists seize power, our communities are among the first to suffer. Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans have already targeted LGBTQ+ rights, from rolling back nondiscrimination protections to attacking transgender youth. If they succeed in rigging congressional seats and silencing voters, the consequences for LGBTQ+ people will be devastating: more anti-LGBTQ+ bills, more threats to our families, and more attempts to erase us from public life.
By passing Proposition 50, Californians can ensure that every vote counts, that our voices are not silenced, and that LGBTQ+ people - and all marginalized communities - continue to have a fighting chance for equality, safety, and dignity," Hoang concluded.
For decades, Equality California has fought to ensure fair representation through the redistricting process. In the 2011 cycle, Equality California successfully pushed the Citizens Redistricting Commission and local commissions in San Francisco, Sacramento, Los Angeles, Long Beach and San Diego to recognize geographically connected LGBTQ+ communities as communities of interest, strengthening the community's ability to elect candidates of choice. Building on this legacy, Equality California led a months-long campaign during California's most recent redistricting process to secure equitable maps that unite LGBTQ+ communities statewide. The result was a series of historic victories, including Long Beach's 42nd Congressional District, which paved the way for Robert Garcia to become the first openly LGBTQ+ immigrant elected to Congress, and new districts in San Diego, Los Angeles, Sacramento, and the East Bay that united LGBTQ+ neighborhoods and expanded the community's political power.
Ballots will begin arriving in Californians' mailboxes starting October 6, 2025, with official ballot drop-off locations opening on October 7, so voters can cast their vote early or return ballots by Election Day on November 4, 2025. For more information, visit stopelectionrigging.com.
