Ramirez, Casar Lead Call For Congressional Hearings With AI CEOs

Washington, DC - Today, Congresswoman Delia C. Ramirez (Il-03), Ranking Member of the House Homeland Security Subcommittee on Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Protection, and Congressman Greg Casar (D-TX) led 17 members of Congress calling on Speaker Mike Johnson (LA-04) to immediately schedule open hearings with the CEOs of America's largest AI companies.

In a letter to Johnson, the members wrote: "Advanced AI models pose a clear risk to the safety and security of the American people. [...] At the same time, Artificial Intelligence threatens to displace millions of American workers. [...] Unfortunately, Congress has so far completely failed to respond to the threats posed by AI development. That must change. The CEOs of the largest AI companies should answer questions under oath, and Americans should have a chance to hear from independent experts on the dangers posed by this technology. We urge you to work with the committees of jurisdiction to schedule hearings immediately."

The letter comes on the heels of leading AI companies, including OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta, announcing that their models escaped test environments to hack other organizations. The members write: "The American people deserve clear answers about the causes of these incidents, what failures or potential negligence at the companies led to them, and the types of regulation required to make sure they never happen again," the letter says.
