Upcoming bridge closures in east-central Georgia


Tennille, Ga. - The Georgia Department of Transportation and its construction contractors plan to close two bridges in east-central Georgia on Monday, March 2. These closures will allow crews to demolish and reconstruct the bridges at these locations more efficiently and safely and will minimize the duration of construction.

State Route 81 detour
In Newton County, State Route 81 is scheduled to close at Dried Indian Creek. Georgia DOT awarded a $5.5 million contract to CMES, Inc. to replace the existing bridge at this location. The closure is expected to last about five months. Detour: SR 81 north to US 278, US 278 west to I-20, I-20 west to Exit 84/SR 162, SR 162 south to SR 81.

State Route 80 detour
State Route 80 is scheduled to close at the Little River, near the McDuffie/Wilkes/Warren County line. Georgia DOT awarded a $4.2 million contract to E.R. Snell Contractor, Inc. to replace the existing bridge at this location. The closure is expected to last about nine months. Detour: SR 80 south to I-20, I-20 east to Exit 172/US 78, US 78 north to SR 80.
