MDOT commits funding for Benzie and Grand Traverse county projects linking history with accessible activities

LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has announced the commitment of $2 million in federal funds for two Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) projects in Benzie and Grand Traverse counties. At this stage, MDOT is issuing conditional commitments reserving federal transportation funds designated by Congress for state-approved projects. These grants create immeasurable socioeconomic value by improving health, stimulating economic development and empowering disadvantaged communities.

The following two approved projects received grant commitments:

Built on the former Ann Arbor Railroad bed, paving the Betsie Valley Trail is a historic final connection completing a 30-year rail-to-trail vision fueling Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) mobility access, revitalizing Thompsonville Junction and integrating regional heritage sites. This segment is part of the 22-mile trail connecting Frankfort, Elberta, Buelah and Thompsonville in Benzie County. The western edge of the trail in Weldon Township cuts through the Pere Marquette State Forest, crossing a renovated railroad bridge and remnants of a 19th century hydro turbine. This final 4.1-mile stretch funnels into the Thompsonville Junction, a 19th century railroad hub, which is being converted into a world-class bicycle campground and trailhead pavilion. Four miles of pavement connect all Michigander rollers, strollers and walkers to history, cycling, camping and economic prosperity.

The 3-Mile Trail Phase 2 in Grand Traverse County will be a shared-use pathway and boardwalk in East Bay Township. The project will connect to Phase 1 of the 3-Mile Trail (2027 construction) and to a Safe Routes to School (SRTS) project (2026 construction), improving connectivity to schools, employment centers and commercial services, strengthening the more than 100-mile regional active transportation network.
