Volusia County Fire Rescue Shares Tips for a Spooky, Not Smoky Halloween

Posted On: October 26, 2026

As residents prepare their homes with pumpkins, lights, and spooky decorations for Halloween, Volusia County Fire Rescue is encouraging families to take steps to reduce the risk of fires and other hazards during the holiday.

From candlelit jack-o'-lanterns to artificial spiderwebs and decorative lighting, popular seasonal displays can pose risks when placed near open flames or heat sources. Checking these items and their placement can help prevent an unexpected emergency.

As families put the finishing touches on their holiday displays, the department recommends the following safety measures:

  • Choose safer lighting: Use battery-operated candles or LED lights instead of open flames inside jack-o'-lanterns and other Halloween decorations.
  • Keep decorations away from heat: Place artificial spiderwebs, dried cornstalks, hay bales, and other combustible materials away from candles, light fixtures, and other heat sources.
  • Check electrical decorations: Inspect decorative lights, extension cords, and other electrical equipment for damaged wiring or loose connections. Avoid overloading electrical outlets and use equipment rated for outdoor use when decorating outside.
  • Keep exits clear: Make sure decorations don't block doorways, walkways, or other exits residents and visitors may need during an emergency.
  • Use caution with costumes: Keep children wearing loose or flowing costumes away from candles, fireplaces, and other open flames.

Before welcoming trick-or-treaters or guests for a gathering, residents should test their smoke alarms and double-check that decorations and electrical equipment are positioned and operating safely. Halloween should be filled with costumes, candy, and spooky surprises, not unexpected emergencies.
